In Southwark, Ss Laurence, Dunstan, and Theodore are honoured on 3 February. This day is also the feast of St Blaise, martyred in the fourth century.
Tradition tells that when St Blaise was being arrested, a distressed mother begged his prayers for her only child, at that moment choking on a fishbone. The saint prayed, and the child was saved. After Masses on 3 February throats will be blessed with candles, while St Blaise’s protection “from every disease of the throat and from every other illness" is implored.
